DON'T uninstall the MS patches. That will almost certainly make things
worse.
Most likely, your problem is that WinOnCD 5 broke when the OS was
fixed. This is unfortunate but not worth raging against.
So first of all, you really should apply all the latest patches to
WinXP, especially SP2. Among other things, it fixes dozens of security
holes. I've seen many SP1 machines incapacitated by malware that SP2
blocks.
The usual second step would be to reinstall WinOnCD 5. The problem is
that you don't know if you can trust their installer - will it
overwrite your updated system files with old obsolete ones? (This is
not as common a problem as it used to be, but WinOnCD 5 is at least a
few years old.)
Thus I reluctantly recommend upgrading your burning software to
something more modern. WinOnCD DVD 8 (the most recent version of the
product) seems only to be available in the German market, but I could
be wrong.
Personally, I've never had much luck with Roxio products.
I don't know why you say that Nero will conflict with other apps, I've
never had that problem, and I've used it on many different machines.
It's not perfect -- there are some UI bugs, even in the latest
versions -- but I've never seen better.
Beyond that, I can only suggest that you ask around in the CD-R
groups.
