(I think I get your points, and they make a lot of sense in much music.
I just don't quite understand why a percussion instrument couldn't also
exhibit its harder qualities, sometimes? Composers like Haydn ask for
all kinds of sound effects - why not that? Nobody is, I believe,
trying to make hard sticks an obligatory way of life. But I readily
admit this whole issue is not one I'm constantly all that concerned
with.)
