When I first started listening to Monk I would hear the
hesitations. I now hear those hesitations as him creating.

But if an unknown student were to do something like this during a lesson, the instructor would probably say something like "Why do they send me students like this, with no left hand, no right hand, no sound, and no hope?" Curious that some players can sell idiosyncratic playing like this more than others, perhaps by sheer force of personality, who knows.
