I assume this s a different mechanism than perfect pitch?
Ain't Google grand? Applying a tuning fork to your forehead is using a type of hearing called bone conduction. This bypasses all the normal parts of our hearing system i.e., outer and middle ears, aka ear canal, ear drum, and the ossicles. My guess is that when our distant ancestors moved out of the water onto dry land, they found that they didn't hear so good so they had to come up with this rather convoluted system to be able to hear in a non-aqua environment.
I was able to recognize the house that I lived in which we moved out of when I was 6 years old. I took a picture of it and showed it to my dad and he confirmed it. That was a bit of a shock.
