I'm no astronomer so hopefully, someone will correct me if I got the
facts wrong. I'm hopeful that I'll get to see the milky way before I
kick the bucket. Word is that this may not be possible due to light
pollution.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. The sun is on an outer spiral
arm. one rotation around the galactic center takes 220 million years.
A 25,000 year cycle of what? sounds like my dryer when it needs a good
cleaning.

Thanks Wolly, it seems that this has nothing to do with any alignment of the solar or galactic planes. You're right that it has do with the shortest day of the year and the sun rising from the center of the milky way galaxy. I'm gonna have to do more reading to get the mechanics of this thing down but thanks for setting me straight. :-)
