Sorry for the spam, but since there was a thread about improv
recently, I thought I'd plug my course. I'm teaching an on-line jazz
improv class atwww.musicdojo.comstartingtomorrow(9/28). It's a
two week course, where you download a lesson each day and then can
discuss the material with other students and myself through the
message board on the site. The course is designed to help people
begin using a jazz vocabulary to improvise with (sort of a "bridge the
gap from rock to jazz" course). There are some a number of good
courses through music dojo.

1: Are you going to keep going after this one ends (into advanced
courses?)
2: If you don't sign up today can you still sign up later for the same
material?
3: Can you keep the downloads or are do they expire?
Thanks!
Thanks for your questions. Yes, this course is the first in at least
a three part series. The second course is written and ready to be
launched. Course three is in process. All of the courses run every 8
to 12 weeks, so this course will be offered again if you don't sign up
now. Yes the downloads are yours to keep (pdfs and mp3s).. Some video
files will be offered for future courses (and should be available to
download and keep)

So it is only available for that one day- you can't get Monday's
lesson tomorrow or later if you sign up late?- Hide quoted text -

Hi Blackhawk,
Thanks for your questions. I think the material is available for
the entire two weeks that the course runs, so if you miss a day or
two, you should still be able to get the material and work on it on
your own. I don't run the musicdojo site, but that is my
understanding. The tech support person for the site (Len Sitnick)
might have more information on that. Enrollment is usually open for
the first week that the course runs and then all of the previous days'
materials should still be available to you. You also might be able to
get a sample of some of the material if you e-mail tech support from
the site. They are pretty nice folks and certainly want to keep
potential students interested.

Thanks, Eric
Here's a heads up business suggestion (I have been guilty here as
well): get to know the ins and outs of how the business works so that
you can make the quick sale at the moment of interest. That time gap
of having to email and work to get info will sap the customer's
interest. Strike while the iron is hot and eliminate as many hoops
here as you can.
Again, I mean no disrespect (I want you to succeed!)

Thanks Robert,
No offense taken. That's good advice. I'm the victim of being an
artist more than a businessman and am often slow in passing on gig and
workshop info. My work schedule of teaching 60 plus hours a week also
makes it difficult to do anything promotional or on line except in the
evenings (I really need a manager). :-)
--Eric E.
Eric,
60 plus hours? You have over 120 students? WOW- how did you swing
that?
Maybe you don't need any more money :)
Peace,

Hey Robert,
I know it seems astounding at first, I have a friend who teaches
90 students a week, which I think is a lot to manage. I actually only
have 40 private students (although quite a few take hour long
lessons). I also teach at a conservatory and work in the public
schools which creates the insanely long work week. As much as it
seems like it would be lucrative, life is so expensive where I live:
I'm the single bread winner for a family of 5, with a mortgage, home
improvement needs, kids' activities, student loans, two cars, medical
expenses, insurances, business expenses, taxes...etc. I could use a
few more gigs if I had more hours in the day. You can imagine that my
performance scheule is greatly reduced as a result of my teaching. I
do enjoy the teaching though and I seem to be meeting some success
with it. The on-line classes are great in that they require less time
to manage and I only have to write the material once. If you know of
anyone looking to study with a slightly stressed out but highly
orgainzed and professional jazz guitar instructor, I'm the guy. :-)

Eric, that is too much work. I guess you can't practice much. I
think I'm overloaded teaching 21 hours a week of classes ( I had to
take over an extra class from a sick colleague). Next semester I will
be back to 18 hours whci is still and overload.- Hide quoted text -

Hi Luteman,
Yes, it's a little too much. 21 hours a week for classes is a lot
too. How many classes do you teach? I'm sure grading and keeping up
with student performance can be really tough when you're in class that
many hours. My plan is to cut back about 10 hours over the course of
the year. I do actually get some practice time in, in the early
mornings (5:30 AM or so for an hour and a half), but sometimes I'd
like to practice more if I have some arrangements to work out or want
to actually work on something new like my classical playing. Also I
have to cancel students when I perform, which is a drag.
