Begin by standing on a comfortable surface , where you have plenty
of
room at each side. With a 5-LB potato sack in each hand, extend your
arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you
can.
Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find
that
you can hold this position for just a bit longer.
After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-LB potato sacks. Then try
50-LB
potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a
100-LB potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more
than a full minute. (I 'm at this level.)
After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each sack.
Very cute.

I was confident that a kettle bell guy would appreciate this! I
recently entertained a fantasy that kettle bells might be a good
activity for me but discovered quickly that even the most basic moves
are beyond my ability given my age and stroke-related infirmity. Maybe
if I'd started 40 years ago...

From semi-OT to completely OT:
The I've got a handful of trainer certifications now, and the training
that the RKC program offers is second to none - it's fantastic, and many
lifetime, full-time fitness professionals say it's the best training
they ever received. You might consider training with a RKC, even just
once for an hour, because getting off on the right foot really make a
difference. They are getting tougher and tougher at the RKC, too -
typically pass rate is only about 70%, and for the Level II instructor
course, I believe the pass rate at the most recent training was only
30%. This is, of course, no guarantee that every RKC is good, but I
believe most are. Many also offer workshops wherein, over the course of
anywhere from 2 hours to half a day or so, teach you some of the basic
moves.
I am doing one such one-hour intro later this morning for a man who
described himself at 61 years old, overweight, out of shape, but highly
motivated - that sounds like a good place from which to begin to me. I
recommended a DVD and book to him, and after working with me today,
he'll try to do this on his own for a while.
I am happy to take this offline - just email me if you wish to continue
the conversation as I never tire of talking about this stuff. The RKC
was truly transformative for me - I cannot overstate the impact that
it's had on my well-being.
