Google phrases like
the great cholesterol myth
and do some reading. There are plenty of reasons to do all the
things you mention, e.g., better eating and more exercise, but you
needn't do it because of your cholesterol numbers.
My view also.
Also read up on coconut oil and other good, saturated fats, and be
sure to get enough of them - not just fish oil, but add nuts to your
diet,
I may not be up to date on the matter of fats, but I believe that the
approach that was used in the Ornish et al study (the JAMA article I
linked to in my prior post) is the only non-medical approach so far
that has actually been reported to reverse - not just prevent, but
reverse - coronary artery disease. And one of its main points was to
reduce fat intake (mostly polyunsaturated) to less than 10 % of all
consumed calories.
Reducing the fats they used say were the only good kinds - yes. Reduce
fat to 10% of all calories - no way! Fat is delicious and good for you.
I think we're on the same page here.

and just generally stick as close to whole, unprocessed foods as you
can. If you want to be a religious fanatic about your diet, swear off
fast food and soda. For everything else, do the best you can.
Ditto.

I'm going on a health kick. (Which explains why I've been studying
up
on fructose and wheat and such lately.)
My latest lipid panel came in with numbers that are going downhill
fast:
Cholesterol 266
Triglyceride 150
HDL Chol 53
LDL Chol 183
Using the Typ approach -- http://trackyourplaque.com -- I'm going to
try to turn it around fast without using statins. Basically, it's
give
up wheat and sugar; take fish oil, Vitamin D3, and niacin; make sure
my thyroid is right; and get some exercise.
And it starts with a heart scan. That's a CAC scan, or Coronary
Artery
Calcium scoring.
There's a local hospital that has a good low-radiation scanner -- a
Somatom dual-source scanner (DSCT) -- which is a lot better than
the
high-end 64-slice machines in most places, and they charge only $129
for the scan! But the hitch is that I'll need a doctor's referral.
Tomorrow I'm going to talk to my doctor about the scan. I'm hoping I
won't have to go outside my insurance to get a referral.
So, any opinions here on heart scans? Or on TYP?
