Friends,
This group isn't what it used to be. Has the cg hobby fallen by the
wayside due to the economy?
TG
RMCG isn't TV with 25-hour programming to keep us occupied and out of
trouble.
Here's a topic:
When do you know that it is time to move on to another teacher? If
you've done so, what was the process like? How long did it take?
Ed S.
If your current teacher is open-minded enough, you might be able to
"survey" the other local teachers by studying different topics with
them. For example, my teacher advises me to study improvisation with
another guy. You could study a little flamenco with someone else. It
would almost be like an open marriage!- Hide quoted text -

Ok, let's get into this. The past 6 months I've been struggling with
growing dissatifaction with CG. There isn't much fun there or passion
for hobbiest players. The simplest CG peice demands almost perfect
technique. I spend 99% of my time not having any fun with CG. I
prepped for my "recital" of 2 measlly short pieces, and I and everyone
else was judged on our technique. The reason is only near perfect
technique can make a CG composition sound musical. There are a few
Brouwer peices I play that give me a good feeling but listeners just
hear the lack of technique. There comes a time when each of us has to
face something as objectively as possible. If I can't do the
composers I like justice I'm not sure I should play their music.
But, I am about to pull the trigger on a Kentucky KM 172 Oval hole
mandolin so I can play the Blues mandolin and god knows whatever else
comes up, but not classical mandolin stuff. I just don't have the
chops to play perfect.
You mentioned Flamenco - interested me once yet as white as I am I
feel closer to the Blues than Flamenco. Go figure.
Maybe a few months off while my elbow recuperates will recharge my
batteries. I just came off 6 years of constant lessons without any
breaks except a week here and there for vacations and illnesses. Know
what I still like to learn - Giuliani's Eccosaises! Diabelli's 30
studies with variations! Bouwer! Hey, know what that sounds like -
variety. Compositions that actually make me laugh or go "wow" at the
harmonies I'm playing.
But the Mandolin is calling me. It is saying, "Hey big guy, I only
have 4 strings to contend with." "Well. I'm goin' to Brownsville,
gonna take that right hand road..."
Actually 8. I have of late 12 strings to contend with.
Bob
