In Ayurveda, there is a sixth taste, namely astringent. Most americans
relate only to salt and sweet, which is pretty much the flavor of McDonald's
fast food and meat genrally. In Ayurveda, it is believed that emphasizing
one form of taste over another leads to imbalances in the body. The most
obvious result of the american penchant for sweet and salty is obesity and
heart disease.

Yes Charlie! Sweet taste is considered the worse for your health,
and Bitter is considered the best. Unfortunately people are easily
attracted to a sweet taste, and don't like a bitter taste. Bitter
taste is found in leafy green vegetables like Dandelion greens,
mustard greens, anything green and leafy. These vegetables are
missing in the American diet, and is the underlying cause of many
diseases, including cancer. Diseases caused by sweets don't manifest
until later in life when the damage is already done. Corn syrup is in
everything Americans eat, and Americans are the most obese, and
unhealthy people on the planet.
When I was recently in Sikkim the family I stayed with served Bitter
Mellon with every meal to counter the taste and promote balance. Also
it is said in Ayurveda that in order to assimilate the nutrients in
food the meal must contain all five tastes.
McDonald's is everything that is bad for you. In addition to the
nuked/dead food they serve which is the equivalent of eating
cardboard, you wash it down with an ice cold sugar drink. What is
almost worse than the sugar is the ice cold temperature. Two things
that kill the digestive fire according to Ayurveda is sugar, and
cold. Very strange that in the west we eat desert after the meal,
which is sweet and kills the digestive fire.
Ever eat a big meal then have desert and wonder why you feel like
***?

When I was in school we were taught that there were four distinct
tastes detected by the taste buds--sweet, sour, salt, and bitter. They
showed us a map of where the majority of the buds for each taste
resided on the tongue.
Turns out the tongue map is completely made up. No anatomical correlation.
