Since we're talking about bad things for us (and, by extension, the
environment) what about the potentially huge number of big batteries
(lithium ion. lithium hydride) that will have to disposed of when the
electric/hybrid car batteries wear out (I'm told they last about 5 years).
I've read that the outcome will be more harmful than the current problem
with fossil fuel residues. I assume/hope they can be recycled/reused. Maybe
a chemist among us can add to this.
Thorny problem since our world can't exist without transportation.
I've also seen a report that some engineer thinks he has modifications to
the current internal combustion engine so that it would be at least two
orders of magnitude more efficient than the current engines - hope this is
true.

Of course those who insist on pushing us all into buying those daft curly

Where we live fluctuations in line voltage kill those curly bulbs in
about 6 weeks. In spite of that our provincial government has now
decreed that 'normal' incandescent bulbs will no longer be allowed to be
sold in Ontario after 2010. Needless to say bulk sales of 'regular'
bulbs have been excellent in this area for the past few months.
I've thought about the disposal problem. I think there must be some kind
of reclamation centers. They may require more energy to run than the
incandescent bulbs though. Of course, most offices here use the old
straight-tube fluorescent bulbs, which probably are a bigger disposal
problem at this point than the compact bulbs, but it's the same idea.
I don't know why you'd have those kind of line voltage fluctuations. We've
had some compact fluorescents last for many years. It's annoying that
they take some time to reach full illumination power, but I can deal with
that.
