I think you may be overestimate the "foundation" most students get
in English, Math and Science in the public school system and the
amount of work that teachers need to do in those subjects when they
enter college. We see way too many examples of that lack of
foundational skills in those subjects in RMCG and I'd venture to say
that as a group RMCG is well above the US national average. How can a
student graduate high school without ever having read a book? Yet, it
happens all the time.
I really do think that music and the arts in general are critical
to education but the lack of math and science foundation is causing a
cascade of disasters for the future of the US.
One of my students tonight has an older brother who is an Oncologist
and after talking a bit about the importance of his little brother's
math skills he joked with me asking, "Are you Asian?" This was after I
suggested that while little brother got first place in the county
academic decathlon his math skills were more important, IMO.
