And there is nothing wrong with that as long as we keep that in the
front of our minds and at the top of all discussions.

I learned something about the conservation of energy doing physics when I
was about 10 or 11 as a basic principle. Don't see how it can take less
energy to dissociate two Hs from one O, than is produced by re-uniting
them. 'Free energy' is a very misleading term!

Generate electricity on site from PV and wind. Requires no distribution
grid.

Store the energy from the PV and wind as pumped water.
Store the energy from the PV and wind as hydrogen.
Store the energy from the PV and wind in batteries.
Store the energy from the PV and wind in ultracapacitors.
Build hybrid vehicles whith alternative battery ultracapacitor or hydrogen
fuel cell operation.
Hydrostatic transmission with hydraulic accumulator storage. Works with
regenerative braking.
Electric drive with battery storage. The Edison battery is the only one with
sufficient life expectancy, 80 to 90 years. LI is probably the most
efficient.
Electric drive with ultracapacitor storage. Works with regenerative braking.
Electric drive with hydrogen storage.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of these schemes?
Who profits, who does not profit?
