Mark and Steve,
So I went for my first cleaning in 4 years today. First of all, I
have a cavity under an already large filling, so I'll need a crown for
that. But the hygenist was astonished at the degree of "occusal wear"
on my lower teeth. The doctor later came in and was pretty surprised
too. It doesn't seem as bad on the upper deck. Naturally they
attribute it to teeth grinding at night, and want me to wear some
ridiculous apparatus. I'll do as they advise, but I didn't tell them
that I also drink gallon after gallon of diet soda during the week. I
bet this is the real culprit! I asked the hygenist: "Can't they just
spray some new coating on those teeth and patch them up?". "Yes, but
it is expensive," she replied. What does she think I am, some kind of
pauper? Anyway I'll try the mouthguard and see how that goes.
Next, I have tons of bacteria all over the insides of my gums! She
showed me the X rays and said: "See, look at all this bone loss."
When the dentist came in, asked her "did you get all this supra?" and
she said "I could barely get the sub!", or something like that. They
gave me two options: come in for a "deep cleaning", where they said
they would knock me out and scrape away all that stuff, or just come
in for a bunch of cleanings in a row. They recommended the latter
since its cheaper and I seem to have a high pain tolerance. Once
again, I must look like a vagabond. But I wanted to look like a tough
guy, so I opted for the latter. I did lamely inquire whether I
couldn't just swish with antibiotics, but they shot me down. Seems
like it should work.
Hopefully after a few months of scraping or whatever, I should be
right as rain. Whoo hoo!!
Ignore your teeth and they'll just go away
.
