Brought up on "Pumping Nylon", my nails have always been short. If they protruded much at all beyond the fingertip, they would be quickly filed down. My technique developed to depend, rather precisely, on their length. If they got too long, it would seem "sticky" and I would have problems moving through the string, especially for rest stroke.

Recently, I have experimented with growing them longer and seeing what would happen. Strangely, it has seemed to increase my technical facility!

The longer nails have made it easier to get tone, also encouraged a smoother, less "poky" stroke. I have even developed a rest stroke motion which is more dependable than the one with shorter nails. To me, these are counterintuitive results. I always thought that the longer the nails, the more the resistance and the more difficult the stroke would become.

I am wondering if anyone else here has had similar results?
