For the record, and in case anyone might agree with you merely on the
force of your words rather than your logic, I disagree completely.

I believe anyone who cannot see the aesthetic unity and clarity of
Sor's compositions - especially in his miniature works - is looking
for something in the music that may not exist. Even something as
innocent as Op.60 #2 shows, through the formal narrative of that
melody, a care and understanding of the lexicon of the musical art.
Label Sor a traditionalist rather than an innovator, but certainly no
slob as an artist.

My limited exposure to Sor has taught me to play even the simplest
study (Op60 #1) with the care and dedication I would apply to a Bach
transcription.  I'm about to start Sor's Andantino Op 35 #18 for Grade
4.

That is a good one. (Op 35,  #18).  How did you do on the Mertz Romanze?

It is now part of my repertoire. I played it for the Grade 3 exam and
flubbed a note or two. I've been experimenting with slightly
different ornaments, and adhering to the written dynamics. I finally
was able to add a small Bach piece. I played the Gavotte II from the
6th Cello Suite. It needs a bit more work but I think I broke my Bach
jinx. Right before every exam I say the same thing: this is it, no
more after this exam. Then I do well in the exam and get in my car
and start planning the next grade while driving home.

For the Grade 4 modern piece I'm doing Rodrigo Riera's
"Monotonia" (#2) from "4 Venezuelan Pieces". All 4 pieces are very
tasty and have that sound of South America that I would like under my
fingers.
