What a neat piece!. I find it more like the musical material in the
pavan has been subjected to the development process as if in a sonata
than a conventional set of variations- I suppose that is what the
"libres" qualification in the title is meant to convey.. I like the
way distinctly recognizable features of the pavan emerge; it makes me
wish I could have had the "aha" experience if hearing it without
having known before hand what it is based on.
The Nin-Culmell variations mentioned in the other thread is also a
good piece, as a conventionally designed set in which the theme is
first clearly stated, and the texture of each variation then tracks
through the theme on a one measure to one basis. If there were to be
another set of variations on the same theme in the contemporary
repertoire, then Alain found the ideal way to go about it; that both
composers used the same piece as a basis seems as if in homage to
Milan's having written in this pavan what in actuality is itself the
earleist extant published variations in the repertoire- anticipating
Narvaez's ovetly titled "Diferencias...".
