React to this.
The words of an egalitarian philistine (who no doubt passes as a
sophisticate). As if ignorance of some of the greatest music ever
written is a virtue. That's our shameful age: Ignorance, ignorance of
(or hostility to) the heights is seen as virtuous.
Receptivity to the highest things is indeed special. Yet one isn't to
feel snooty about this receptivity, for it's a consequent of grace,
pure grace. This is especially evident in our low, soiled, depraved
age.
In any event, the significance of opera in no way flows from the
amount of applause given it. Reject scientism. Reject shallow
egalitarianism. The truth of the matter is beyond quantity. If no one
at all applauded it, if everyone hated it, opera would still be of the
greatest musical significance.
Speaking of which, I recommend this, the greatest performance of Aida
yet recorded on video:

Jackson, every time I begin to think you've achieved a summit of
intellectual bigotry so lofty it cannot be surpassed by mortal man,
you prove once again, I am wrong. You possess a truly unique talent,
nigh unto a Platonic ideal, for rhetorical arrogance. Whether this is
the result of disciplined study, practice, and perseverance, or simply
a manifestation of Satanic grace, I do not know, but as you clearly
revel in it, play on! Play on! "Grow higher ancient doors, let him
enter, the King of [hubris]."
