Most of the newsgroups I read are becoming inundated with spam. I saw a post

says that Google Groups is the conduit for a lot of spam hitting usenet. I have
no connection with this site.
I¹d seen anti-Google Groups stuff before and ignored it. I use a dedicated
newsgroups reader (MT-Newswatcher on Mac) but was never enough of a purist to
care if others posted via Google or not. But the spam was getting to me. So I
followed its instructions and added a filter to Newswatcher: Kill if Message-ID
contains ³googlegroups.com².
Presto. The spam is gone. Some authentic, quality posts may be gone too; I don¹t
know, thus I post this. I¹m sorry if I miss the value that you add to this
group, but I need to keep this filter.
Gee, Spam has always been on the newsgroups, I ain't noticed any sudden
surge. That's a pretty radical solution. Personally, I would be wary of
a site that labels Google Groups users as "lusers" or "lamers." That is
sooooo rude! So what if it's ture? Anyway, the battle for the usenet
should be entertaining. :-)

Yeah...I'm not sure I understand the logic behind this.
It's like throwing away a dictionary because somebody used it to write
a nasty letter.
All this spam inconveniences authentic Google Groups users more than
anyone (since they don't have a killfile); why penalize them?
I'm sure there are many people out there that use Google Groups solely
because of firewall issues. Otherwise they would be using a real
newsreader.

The irony is that Google Groups is the only entity that has the ability to control usenet spam on postings made through it's site and my guess is that they will do this in the future. The usenet dudes are feeling a bit threatened by central filtering and have come up with this modest suggestion. They're hoping that GG disappears by covering their eyes. :-)
