Re: Help me selecting a guitar for a 7 year old

Hi Sang,

The best way is to observe him holding the guitar. Can he effectively
barre on the first fret? Does his left arm extend too far for the guitar
he's holding? Is his right arm too high over the bout of the guitar?
Making him comfortable, now, is most important. Upgrading him later is
of little consequence and smallish expense in the grand scheme.

Thanks for your reply, Seth. My son is playing piano and I want to wait
until next year to start teaching classical guitar. I'm guessing he will
have a firm grasp on music theory by then. I took him to a few guitar
shops around here, and 1/2 size looked perfect for him now, but might
outgrow in a year or two. Is there a good way to determine the proper size
for him?

All small size guitars we tried were costing around $100 (takamine,
yamaha, etc.), and they were more like toys than an instrument. I will
email Ruben Flores.

Hello all,

I am thinking about starting to teach my 6 year old son classical guitar
next year. I can teach him for the first few years and am looking for a
guitar for him. Could you recommend a decent 3/4 size guitar for under
$500?

Thanks

Sang

3/4 size is too large for a 6 year old unless he is quite a bit bigger
than others of his age. I recommend looking on Rubenflores.com. He
carries 44 cm, 48cm, 53cm, 54cm requinto and other fractional sizes
that would be more appropriate for a child that age.

Also, he carries a solid top strunal model that is much better in tone
than the laminated top version.
