It's this shift in focus that seems to be something most students
are not aware they do. Nobody maintains the same level of focus from
beginning to end during performance

This is true, Larry, but the capacity of maintaining a very high level of
concentration (focus) on each detail of the performance - the music, the
fingering, the whole body - is exactly what qualifies a very good player,
and I believe that such a skill (which can improve a lot with specific
training) does not - or should not - depend from the fingering one uses.
This should be one of the factors kept under control by concentration, not a
way to help to maintain it at a high level. Among the perfomers whom I dealt
with, only a few (are) capable of reaching the point where the energy going
in the music is matched, in its dynamic profile, by the mind of the
performer, in a perfect balance. Forgive me if I misunderstood your point.

The difference between students is mostly one of ability focus on
the subject. This ability can be improved but for many students the
larger issues of life's duties and complexities often overwhelm their
ability to see themselves as capable of sustained mental and physical
focus.

What I am interested in is the how that focus changes over time
and how that differers from student to student. Certainly those most
capable of sustaining high levels of focus are worth understanding but
understanding the impediments to those who are not as capable is more
to the point of my post. Self conscience focus is the major problem
for most beginners but once they get into the music their focus is not
constant and places like repeats need more work. I think knowing the
places where students get confused hold the key to much of learning
and teaching.
