are not aware they do. Nobody maintains the same level of focus from
beginning to end during performance
This is true, Larry, but the capacity of maintaining a very high level of concentration (focus) on each detail of the performance - the music, the fingering, the whole body - is exactly what qualifies a very good player, and I believe that such a skill (which can improve a lot with specific training) does not - or should not - depend from the fingering one uses. This should be one of the factors kept under control by concentration, not a way to help to maintain it at a high level. Among the perfomers whom I dealt with, only a few (are) capable of reaching the point where the energy going in the music is matched, in its dynamic profile, by the mind of the performer, in a perfect balance. Forgive me if I misunderstood your point.
