That's all gospel, and furthermore it's vintage Segovia. What isn't
vintage Segovia is the fact that I did a much better job of writing a
scale set than he did, because I did it with a lot more imagination,
experience, care, thought, and attention than anyone else.
Assuming this is true, do you acknowledge that you did it only by
standing on his shoulders?
Yes, absolutely. Many failures is what it takes to succeed, and I had my
fair share over decades. I estimate that what I have now is the result
of my third total restart. My only real inheritance in this in
particular was in partially defining goals, and that's not a little
thing. The nature of the beast is that technique is like a fine
emerald. Any defect and it's completely worthless. That's because, if
you aren't doing the best, you're wasting your time and effort. You have
to throw it out and start all over. All you gain is experience. And
theory always follows practice, as George Thaddeus Jones wrote. Truer
words were never written. daveA

Playing "as written" is paying attention, not being a fanatic.
Efficiency in performance is a shadow, always following effective
practice. Such efficiency is not a goal. Don't chase a shadow.
Skill is strength and control. Wisdom is knowledge and judgment.
