Once again I query our group members with my naive observations. This
time I'm curious about the reasons why you might finger and then
refinger
a given piece.

I used to play Leo Brouwer's "Berceuse" (Cancion de Cuna) just about
every day simply because I loved the melody and lovely Cuban theme.

I stopped playing the piece in order to dedicate time to acquire newer
repertoire.

A few months ago I started playing it again according to the fingering
in
the Editions Max Eschig (ignoring the fingering I had originally
penciled in long ago).

In one section, I found the fingering somewhat uncomfortable for my
hands. I just didn't like the feel.

Perhaps coincidentally, my ear told me that the sound produced by using
the edition's fingering in the above section did not come across as
well
on my guitar as it did by using a different location on the guitar
fingerboard.

In other words, my decision to change or add certain fingerings, it
seems, is either to facilitate playability of a passage or to maximize
the best-sounding part of the fingerboard on the guitar.

Do any of you out there find yourselves doing what I do?

Gene - trust your ears above all else. If you believe this, you will
have
to make changes to the fingerings. My least favorite position on the
guitar is the first. That open E sounds so thin and unpleasant sounding
to
me that it will never get to play a choice part in a melody. It's
strictly
a second class citizen. This causes problems sometimes with fingering
but
what is one to do? :-)

Picked up the guitar for the first time in a week. My right ring finger
seems to be no longer partial to receiving instructions from my brain.
No
matter, it will make my rebirth even more spectacular and special.
However, I'm going to take a few days off before starting that
rebirth...

david,

In may case, my ears are going crazy. Part of my dilemma is that guitars
in
general never seem to be in tune, especially in the upper registers
(higher
part of the fingerboard).

If I want to refinger in the upper area, I sometimes decide not to because
things sound out of tune. Yet other more awkward fingerings sound more in
tune.

It's the nature of the damned instrument, I think!!

It's not like the piano that can be in tune or even the violin over which
there is an opportunity to make some compensation without the restriction
of
the frets.

I just get so frustrated when things aren't in tune. I notice it less in
other people's playing.

But when I listening to myself, every and any little thing drives me
crazy.
Sometimes I just stop playing because of it!!!

Maybe I'll take Vincent's lead and cut off my ear..., I mean, cut off both
of my ears

That's soooo messy. Why not just pour molten lead in your ears? That
way you cure the problem without all the bloody mess.

Hope that helps

First, your suggestion is not nearly so artistic as the Van Gogh methodolgy.
Second, I rather pour the molten lead down your throat.

Hope it doesn't hurt so much.
