It certainly seems as though it ought to be, but in practice I think
that once you get past a certain point of adequacy it doesn't matter
all that much. Saddle material is generally denser than the wood of
the bridge, and stiffer, so a larger saddle will tend to 'beef up' the
whole bridge a bit. This could perhaps account for the longer sustain
and 'smoother' sound Tashi mentions. But, as you point out, it's
really hard to do A/B comparisons on this one. Perhaps one could make
a wide saddle and a narrow one with a shim, but swapping them out
quickly would still be difficult.
