David, you are not so wacky.
I do sometimes stagger that joint. It _is_ stronger that way (think of how bricks are stacked in a wall)...but not much if the joint fit is good.
I believe that Fritz Mueller used to make a ramp (much smaller than on Max's guitar) out of ebony. I don't think he has done that this century.
Some guys build the entire neck out of ebony!
Frederich Holtier used to do that.
One side-effect with additional ebony is additional weight.
As for rosettes. I have a compulsion to experiment with side-grain rosettes. I'm always happy when someone likes the the result. Thanks.

Nice details on both guitars. You don't go for standard rosettes - that's good! I like the raised fingerboard - you could perhaps try extending that piece under the fretboard a couple of frets into the neck which would sort of fit the integral neck/heel idea - it might look cool to use the same material as the fretboard for this - emphasis on MIGHT. :-) Guess I'm just wacky..
