Rebirth of the classical guitar

In Sunday's (7/15) Washington Post, Stephen Brookes writes: "A new
generation of classical guitarists has emerged over the past decade,
raising performance standards and pushing the instrument into new
realms. These players have embraced the instrument's eclectic roots,
while writing innovative works and digging up new repertoire." Brookes
notes the arrival this week of the Alexandria Guitar Festival, "which
has grown from a quiet get-together into one of the most vibrant and
thought-provoking musical events of the summer. Young virtuosos such
as [Ricardo] Cobo, Kenneth Meyer, William Kanengiser (of the Grammy-
winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet), Lorenzo Micheli and Matteo Mela
will be performing new works, giving master classes and exchanging
ideas on the future of the guitar." Cobo tells Brookes: "For many
years Segovia was the captain of the team ... The tight, predictable
mold is being broken."

Paul McGuffin

Kanangiser and Cobo are young? Aren't they in their 40's?

You are correct that they number 40's in HUMAN years. In SEGOVIA years
they would be just coming into their pubes. OTOH, there may be a slight
amount of wishful thinking or maybe even some HYPEing on the part of our
Mr. Brookes - it would probably be best to wait a while before signing
that catering contract for the rebirth gala celebration. :-)

OTOH, there's no doubt that the young'uns don't hold Segovia in such awe
and respect as was generally the case with our older generation. In 50
years time, he may be just a paragraph or two on Wikipedia 5.0, oh yeah,
and I'll be dead. :-)

I know I will date my self here. but, I first saw Segovia on the Ed
Sullivan TV Show.. in black and white. If any of you have ever seen
those old clips, he was one hell of a player in the early days. I have
a fifty song repertoire for my restaurant gig..it very safe also. I
only "dazzle" the tin ears.

My uncle used to have to "date" himself too, but that's another story,
I guess!

50 pieces is an impressive amount to learn - you must be in your 60's?
Do you still have those in your head? I only have enough room in my
head for three or so at a time! Take care.
