I'm in stupid user zone. I just bought a M-Audio Axiom 25 mainly to
use for sight singing and solfege study. I downloaded the M-Audio
Enigma software.
I guess I need to program the keyboard then tell the software how to
play the input AND send the sound to the soundcard.
Any good places to start this quest? I should have just bought the
cheapie music keyboard.
Thanks,

I don't know the Axiom 25 specifically, but I don't think you'll need
to do too much just to hear the keyboard. Most of the programming and
Enigma stuff will only be necessary to set up the other controls
(pads, knobs, etc.) for specific software.
Are you using Windows? If so, try this:
Start Menu -> Control Panel -> (Switch to Classic View, if necessary -
) Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio
There you should see a select list for MIDI playback and maybe
(hopefully) MIDI input. The MIDI playback should be Microsoft GS
Wavetable Synth or some other Wavetable/software synth (depends on
your soundcard). If there's a MIDI input or record, you should be able
to choose your Axiom 25 (first Axiom entry if there's more than one)
there. Once that is set, you should be able to play and hear the
keyboard through your computer/sound card.
If MIDI record/input doesn't appear in the audio control panel, you'll
need to start up some program (a sequencer of some sort, Finale should
work along with lots of other software, there are probably even some
free options) and select the Axiom as the MIDI input in that program
and perhaps set the software synth (Microsoft GS or other) as the
output if it isn't already selected.
Sorry I can't be more specific, but my MIDI computer is currently
mostly dead and I haven't used a keyboard without some sort of
sequencer/synth software. It might not be possible (though it should
be), but I can't check right now.
You'll also want to make sure your MIDI volume is at a decent level.
While you're in the audio control panel, go to the Volume tab and
click "Advanced..." in the "Device volume" section. Look for a fader
labeled (most likely) "SW Synth" and make sure it's at a decent level
and not muted. If you don't see it, you'll need to go to the Options
menu, select Properties, and check the SW Synth box in the list.
Hopefully this helps a little. If you have a Mac, disregard pretty
much all of this. The basic concepts will be the same -- select a
software synth as output (if Mac even includes one by default), select
the Axiom as input, make sure the MIDI volume is set properly -- but
my instructions won't help you find any of the controls for those
settings.

Jeremy,
Thank you. I got the keyboard tp play through Live Lite6. I need to
get a better understanding of the MIDI world. I have some howtos
printed off the web and I have a book ordered at Borders. I don't
have a clear picture yet of what is MIDI and all the bits in the
chain.
Thanks again. I hate this phase of technology.
