I haven't noticed that to be the case.

Check the archive. Check this thread.

Could it then be that nobody else has said anything equivalent to what
Carlevaro taught? And if so, what and who?

What I have noticed in my own experience is that the most
direct method to work on this problem is the one Carlevaro
taught.

Interesting that you found this magic bullet for your squeaks.

Not a magic bullet, just a good, sound technique. And, what makes it
interesting to you that I came upon this?

I remember once sitting very close to Janos Starker when he played
and thinking how loud the bow squeaks and clicks of the bow on the side
were. Another friend was quite a bit further away and said he heard
none
of that.

When my group plays, as with all ensembles, we make all kinds of
noises on stage that we hear that most of the audience does not hear.
Comes with the territory. However, one of the most annoying CG
sounds, that general audience people do often indeed hear and dislike
is the bass string squeak sound. Carlevaro directly addressed that
which is commendable as few guitar pedagogues have addressed it as
well.

Whether it is Carlevaro or Segovia or whoever, the trick is to be
aware of what is out there and when you come upon something good, act
on it.

The common tale about squeaking that I heard was that the divots in
your callous's cause them. The best way to avoid it is to slightly
(SLIGHTLY) twist the string out of your callous and slide on the
string with LH to next position. It's been proven true many times for
me. One doesn't really need to lift the LH 1/2 inch off the string
(per Carlevaro)!. That's a little inefficient. Experiment with this,
it's true.

It's an exercise to practice efficiency and importantly..."accuracy" of
motion, thus the 1/2" in practice....much less in performance reality. The
spider hop analogy is a very good one, btw.

So your students come to people like me, after years of wondering
about this, I tell them the truth, and they say *hmm, what was all the
worry about*. Like I said, capitalism is an amazing thing, there are
those who build and those who destroy. It's a symbiotic relationship.
