His hand position is still such that his knuckles run fairly parallel
with the strings.

He wrote a book in which he *said* to do that, but I saw him many times
try and fail to make it work, give up, and play the rest of the concert
like everybody else. You are proposing a discussion based on a premise
that is simply not true. daveA

I've seen other players with their knuckles
positioned 30-45 degrees from the line of the strings.

I'm really more interested in a discussion of the pros and cons of
both approaches and only mentioned Segovia because he is often
identified as a leading advocate of one particular approach.

I am going to retrieve my various books that discuss technique from
storage and see what I can learn about this. Anthony Glise, in his
book "Classical Guitar Pedagogy"

Who's Anthony Glise? (rhetorical--I don't care)

Sit down. Put the guitar in the correct position (this is another
important point, segovia had his ramirez's angled rather upward.) Put
your hand by your side. Relax. Put your RH on the strings: 1-a 2-m
3-i 4-p. Play a quick backward arpeggio. Now play a forward
arpeggio. It's really easy as pie. Remember to keep your elbow to
your m-finger in a straight line. If your wrist is too flat, move the
whole arm-system slightly more forward.

David

You need to explain to the student far more than this, such as how far
forward the forearm is, how to execute the stroke (which can vary with
tempo, etc.),
and on and on....

Not at all socrates, there might be a little adjustment by the
teacher. Getting the guitar in the right position is usually the
adjustment that needs done. The RH though usually falls right into
place.

David

The action of the stroke and its components resist any easy solution.

It's easier than you've been told. Play without nails first, you'll
find that it's not that hard. It's fun to try to analyse things to
death, but I'd rather spend that energy analysing the repertoire.
Getting to that point is much more fun. There's a feedback loop that
takes place between a good teacher and a beginner that can't be
described here, that's what teachers are for.

David

You assume like crazy. It's easy now, but it wasn't an easy road
getting here. The without nails thing didn't do much for me. Try not
to assume that your approach works for everybody. maybe more analysis
on your part is needed. How much analysis? Enough to get the job
done. Any less is obscurantist.....

I love you socrates! kisses!

BTW, it was a very easy road for me. What was difficult was all the
analytical proseltysing.
