Hypothetical: You're speaking with a philistine. He says, "Beethoven's
9th stinks. It ranks among the worst symphonies ever written." How do
you respond?

Then, he's not a complete philistine; he has some sense of good
judgement. Many respected musicians would criticise the 9th. I've
studied Beethoven's music and listened to most of it in some detail.
The 9th is an overblown, disjointed collection of ideas, not a
cohesive piece of music. It's designed to be appreciated by someone
with hearing difficulties. Many of those who say they like it, say so
because they've been made to believe they should like it. They'd
probably be impressed by the emporer's new clothes.

Being the philistine that I am, i'd probably ask him if he needs
another beer and then discuss at one point in time did the stones lose
their edge, or why is it Clapton playing the blues in concert is so
much better than listening to overdone overengineered clapton on cd.

Then, i'd point out that Bruce is still the Boss, but thanks to my
daughter, i can appreciate the musicality of black eyed peas and Will.

Betsey, well said!  Amazing how kids expose you to the most unusual
things.  For me I discovered Nirvana.

In the late 80's and early 90's i was so into grunge, it was the new
holy grail for me....I've never been a beatles fan (i was born in 64),
and i really didn't go for the 80's techno stuff that was popular in
highschool and college.

My daughter was born in 1994, and was rocked to sleep while mommy and
curt sang to her....

unfortunatly, when she was one, she decided she liked amy grant. (who
let my daughter listen to such crap!!!)

My son, born in 2002, is growing up loving the black eyed peas,
country stuff <g>, and hums the occassional classical guitar tune he
hears me playing.

fortunately, they both ignore their dad's love affair with the who and
everything 1985 and love Bruce. Like their mom.
