I could only speculate. I know that some manufacturers forbid
the
publishing of sale prices, which is another issue in itself. Perhaps
they think that only the truly interested will "inquire", and then they
have your e-mail address and/or name to endlessly harangue you, which
may be marginally more effective than blanket advertising.
Or maybe someone thinks an air of mystery makes the guitar more
alluring...

Wollybird and Steven - you're probably both right. But I still find
it really annoying. Enough not to pursue a vintage purchase,
especially when active luthiers are available who make excellent
instruments, and are more than willing to tell you exactly what they
ask for them. But then some people like bartering. I just don't
happen to be among them.

We're all just guessing here, so here's mine.

There are no set prices for "special" or "collectible" instruments.
Much depends on conditiion and details which vary from one to the next. The
seller is aware that buyers interested in such instruments must be
negotiated with on a case by case basis and that by stating a price may well
deflect serious inquiries.
