The misnomer "smooth jazz" was created by a group of radio stations. It
started out as "The Wave", but the marketing people soon discovered that
the "smooth jazz" moniker created better demographics. I lived through
the transition with San Diego's KIFM, first part of "The Wave", and a
major player in the transition to the "smooth jazz" description. Still
has one of the strongest signals in the area at 98.1 MHz.
