< Monk, I have had Blue Cross since 1975. Two years ago, my wife
went
to our family doctor for what she thought was a urinary tract
infection. Two series of antibiotics did not resolve the issue, so
our family doctor referred her to the local hospital's Chief of
Urology. She had a cancerous tumor on her bladder. (Everyone,
please quit smoking)
The doctor removed her tumor, appendix, total hysterectomy (48
years old, not going to have any more children, cause of negative
health issues later in life). 8 months of chemothapy, as of this
date, my bride of 25 years (October 20th) is cancer free. We are
not wealthy by any means, and the only bill we received was for
my meals when I visited my wife for the 11 days she was in the
hospital, about $55.00. So, if this is being at the mercy of an
insurance provider, I will accept their mercy any time.
Washington, please leave health care alone. >
A single anecdote isn't representative of anything. You know as
well as I that there are plenty of anecdotes that support my case,
too.
situation. If it woks fine for us, the sytem is not broking and
does not have to be fixed, or most important, fiddled with to suit
the nutz in Washington.- Hide quoted text -
It also might give them a different view on government insurance if- Show quoted text -The government in certain respects may say they care about the
rights of the individual, however, it often translates into bills
or laws that are molded for masses of the population. I say let
all the guys and gals in Congress have their insurance changed to
Medicaid for 5 years and have they experience Medicaid rather than
their own fat insurance policies. When Kennedy had his brain tumor
why not have a 4th year surgery resident operate on his head with
an attending looking over his shoulder? When Reagan had his
colonoscopy why not have a young doctor who needs to get in his
first or second procedure, in an inner city hospital do it while he
is on Medicaid? Might give them a different view on government
insurance.
they had insurance policies like ordinary Americans do and had the
insurance companies looking over the shoulders of doctors and had to
have procedures approved (or denied) in advance.
Judging the quality of a given nation's health-care system according
to anecdotes about the care that the most wealthy receive is
nonsensical. It's simply not a valid measure of how the average
citizen is treated.
I'm afraid that America has gone from being a nation that was
suspicious of power and wealth in a healthy manner to being one that
adores the same and sees most things through the eyes of profiteering
and celebrity. We thrill when the stock market numbers rise - being
constantly moist throughout the 80s - although the buying power of the
average working family continuously dropped, and speculators pumped up
the prices of necessities so they could make profit on nothing. We
love watching rich people on TV, and are all giddy over "get rich
quick" schemes and shows about shiny objects of pleasure and drapings
of sumptuous style. So - of course - we worry about how legislation
might impact the "poor little rich girls" of our society. A
discussion arises about health care, and the main concern is that
rich people might not be able to liposuction their poodles as easily.
It's sick really. We discuss adjusting school schedules to halt the
degrading of our education system, and muckheads worry that it will
cut into kids' purchasing time. To hell with any other value than
sheer company profit. As long as Wal-Mart is happy with a nation full
of the sick and ignorant, why shouldn't we all be?

Money's only part of the equation. Self-centeredness ("I've got mine,
screw everyone else") permeates the so-called "debate" over health care.
True, although I think that "self-centeredness" is partly generated by
and certainly nurtured by capitalism itself, just as the idea of the
"nuclear family" (a form of self-centeredness) is encouraged, since the
smaller the domestic units, the larger the purchasing impulses and
needs. So money and selfish self- regard are not unrelated. The history
of mankind appears to show that group altruism and communal
inter-reaction are essential aspects to societal survival, but modern
capitalism (as can be seen overtly in its advertisement themes) thrives
on making us all "our own superstars" and empowering competitive
small-mindedness at all levels, disguised as "self esteem".

regulates health care like the Obama administration proposes, the
more it is socialised medicine. >
If you agree with any of his points, you must think socialized medicine is a
good thing, since the point he was making was that "group altruism and
communal inter-reaction are essential aspects to societal survival." (though
I disagree with him about the concept of the nuclear family being generated
by capitalism.)
