VH1 classic is going to have a show about the 9/9/9 releases on

VH1 expects the new CDs to "fly off the shelves" but I'm not so sure.
Most people already have the old CDs and the general public doesn't
care much about sound quality.
I don't think that's true. I was spoken to about sound quality
at age 5. But, it depends on your relatives, friends,
who you hang out with, etc, etc.

Of course, there will be a lot of

publicity, and that will increase sales.

I think Jud is speaking about the phenomenon of mp3 and other
compressed music files. He has a point; this is evidence that people
aren't concerned about quality as much as convenience.

If we really, really cared about quality, SACD or DVD-A would have
been accepted as the standard a long time ago.

It's something else besides sound quality, it's availability to consumers. Sony and others opposed DVD-Audio, and the others probably opposed SACD. So now neither will exist. I'd settle for DTS-CDs now, or just putting 5.1 on DVD-Video, but they will do nothing. So it's remastered, good old-fashioned 44.1 kHz, 16 bit PCM digital audio CD now and forever.
Reel to reel tapes were replaced by cassettes.
