On a different thread, someone had mentioned that just because you are
good at something doesn't necessarily mean you would be interested in
continuing to do it. That got me to thinking: If you were really
good at something - say, the best in the world or the greatest of all
time, could you really abruptly walk away from it all and just quit?
Bobby Fischer retired with a FIDE rating of 2785 - the highest at the
time. Gary Kasparov also retired while ranked #1 with a FIDE rating
of 2812 (he holds the record with a rating of 2851 in 1999).
Bjorn Borg was near the top of his game when he decided to retire from
tennis. He lost to John McEnroe in the US Open Final in 1981 and
played in only one tournament in 1982 before retiring in 1983 at age
26. He had won five straight Wimbledons from 1976-1980.
The Beatles skyrocketed to fame and were at the top of the music world
when they disbanded. The last album they recorded, Abbey Road, was a
masterpiece! A few years later, John Lennon totally stopped
performing and recording songs to stay at home and be a house-
husband.
Michael Jordan retired in 1993 after winning three straight NBA
Championships to play baseball. After an unspectacular year playing
baseball, he returned to the NBA in 1995 winning three straight NBA
Championships again starting in 1996. He retired again in 1999. He
returned again in 2001 to the Washington Wizards. He retired for the
final time April of 2003, 10 years after his first retirement.
So my question: If you were the best in the world at what you did,
could you lose interest, just walk away from it all, and quit?
Pertaining to the Beatles, why would they want to stay together
forever
when they could go solo..and do their own thing?
Who in this group would..if you were a Beatle....hearing what George,
John and Ringo had to say? Not me. Paul would have stayed.
If you were already a solo artist..were the best at what you did...and
you were bored,
would you carry on? I wouldn't, if I had enough money.
I can only imagine what it would be like since I'm not the best in the
world at anything. A mug saying "World's Greatest Dad" doesn't
count. :-)
