There's not enough information to say. He hadn't lost his sense of
humor.

He got bored a lot. He got bored and miserable being a *Beatle*. It
would be impossible to keep someone like that happy all the time.
Since he seemed to have easily been the most entertaining person in
any room, he'd have to be the one to keep himself amused. Good for the
audience, bad for him.

John did have an endearing sense of humor, didn't he?

IMO if John did like Japan, it was because he could get "lost." In
other words, he could travel around, eat out, etc. and know that few
people would care who he was.

Some celebrities enjoy the constant attention, but I believe John
tired of it and just wanted fans to leave him alone.
