I don't think the argument is that VU directly influenced a host of
their contemporaries. I think it's probably fair to say that they
influenced a few other "fringe" bands, who did the same, such that
their influence grew exponentially over time, particularly as
experimental music came to be more readily consumed by the public. Now
we have the luxury of looking back at certain trends over the past 40
years and we can point back to many of those as having their genesis
in the music VU was making.
