Both are true. Also, the music industry was very different at the time.
There wasn't really an outlet for something that was so far out of the
mainstream. Unlike the San Francisco groups, they weren't fashionable with
peace and love stuff, nor did they have blues or folk-rock roots, so there
wasn't an audience that could be taken for granted in their case. Even
Zappa (who played a part in the VU's lack of success. At his manager's
insistence, Verve didn't put much support behind the VU) had a hook with the
counterculture in that he obviously made fun of the "straights."
