Once again, that we show compassion where *she* did not, marks the
difference between us and her. Nietzsche's warning about the Abyss is at
play here. Prison was not intended to be a chamber of horrors. We should
watch that we do not become the one who disparages life.

This is the same 'bleeding heart' who on June 12 spake thus "I would
prefer Bush to be found guilty and executed."

Now I suppose you would free him from prison before his execution? Let
him hang in peace?

Apples and oranges. First the "bleeding heart" schtick: I never said I was
against the death penalty. I'm not. Susan Atkins was originally sentenced to
die in the gas chamber. That was overturned. Under the resulting sentence
she qualified to appear before the parole board. Should she have been
executed? Probably. (Although I would oppose the gas chamber). But it just
wasn't in the cards.

I'm not suggesting that Susan Atkins be released to go live a normal life.
I'm just saying this woman be allowed to go to her death bed. If that
qualifies as "bleeding heart", so be it. I am then proud of being a
bleeding heart.\

As for Bush... Hey if he is going to die of some terminable disease in six
months, I'm all for letting him go home. Right now! Forget the trial. Get
the man out of office and let him go die.

But I think you err if you are comparing George Bush to Susan Atkins. A more
appropriate comparison is George W. Bush and Charlie Manson. After all they
both led their own cults. Manson convinced his followers that the Black
Panthers were going to start a race war. Bush convinced the entire nation
that Saddam Hussein posed an immediate threat to the United States. Which is
worse: deceiving the entire nation or deceiving a few drug addled hippies?
Leaving behind the carnage of 9 people or leaving behind the carnage of over
100,000?

Charlie Manson came from a deprived background. Had little education. Spent
most of his early life in prison.
George Bush came from a priveleged background. Was given the best education
the country had to offer. Spent his entire life in a protected environment.

Which of these two deserves greater accountability? I say Bush. But, I am
aware of the right-wing's penchant for kicking around hippies.
