Someone started a thread about the greatest cover songs. Where I don't
agree with the list, it did get me wondering about a couple of things.
The first was P.F. Sloan's guitar intro into "California Dreamin' " and
how does a guitarist work something like that out. It worked perfect for
that song, then the instrumental break for the flute really flushes out
the mood of an autumn day turning into winter. ( Even though the lyric
says "such a winter's day", I always think of that song as a autumn
turning into winter.)
I listen to a lot of that Mamas and Papas stuff on my iPod as I'm falling
asleep. The production and arrangement on those records was amazing. I
think that John Phillips had a lot to do with that.
I posted in "fake-raja" thread:

An interesting article on the mixing of California Dreaming.
By the same token, I read an interview with Bones Howe and he describesI'll have to go look that song up and give it re-listen.
the creation of the Fifth Dimensions Aquarius / Let The Sun Shine record.
Those were two songs from Hair, and the intro was a whole other theme. The
creativity in those days was amazing.
But the other thing that thread made me think about was Nilsson's cover
of Badfinger's "Without You". That is a truly classic cover. And it
makes me wonder, if Nilsson didn't by chance hear that song and never
covered it, would it ever have been discovered? The Badfinger version is
truly a moprag.
How many neglected songs are sitting on forgettable albums waiting for
the right listener to come along and infuse it with it's potential?
I agree. I only heard Badfinger's version in 1974 or 1975, and I was
disappointed. It's certainly emotional, but Harry's version is definitive
(not derisive). Without it, there'd be no Mariah version (which would be
good). And of course, no Ken Lee version:

Yeah, that's hilarious. The only justification for the Idol craze is the
really hilarious stuff. The down side is when they really humiliate people
who are just not very self-aware.
