Diamonds in the rough

Someone started a thread about the greatest cover songs. Where I don't agree
with the list, it did get me wondering about a couple of things.
The first was P.F. Sloan's guitar intro into "California Dreamin' " and how
does a guitarist work something like that out. It worked perfect for that
song, then the instrumental break for the flute really flushes out the mood
of an autumn day turning into winter. ( Even though the lyric says "such a
winter's day", I always think of that song as a autumn turning into
winter.)
But the other thing that thread made me think about was Nilsson's cover of
Badfinger's "Without You". That is a truly classic cover. And it makes me
wonder, if Nilsson didn't by chance hear that song and never covered it,
would it ever have been discovered? The Badfinger version is truly a
moprag.
How many neglected songs are sitting on forgettable albums waiting for the
right listener to come along and infuse it with it's potential?
