How is a response in which you don't even make it clear that you object
to
the racism in the post that you're responding to supposed to eradicate
anything?-
< I gently objected to parts of the post by saying "putting aside the
accent." I am letting the poster know that I don't reject him
entirely, but I do not like the accent part. I trust that he is
intelligent enough to get my point. >
You didn't even say why you objected to the accent part. For all he knew,
you just didn't think it was funny.
Judging by his later posts, in which he claims the accents wasn't racist,
it
seems he missed your point.
I< n a sense I am telling him, "Gee, that's not my taste." There's a
difference between saying "we have different opinions" and coming on
stronger by saying "Your post is racist ***." >
Nice to know you think racism is just a matter of taste and having
"different opinions."
< IMO if I come on too strong and make the other person feel rejected
entirely, why should he or she listen to me? .
You didn't make your point at all. If you don't make your point, he's
still
not listening to you.
If you call it "racist ***," at least other people see that if they say
something racist, it will recognized for what it is and called out as
such.
<There is a wonderful book out there by Dale Carnegie (the famous
millionaire) called "How to Win Friends and Influence People." You
may wish to read it. It is a classic on how to get along (and ahead!)
in business, diplomacy, politics, etc.>
What does it say about racism?
< Sometimes one gets a lot more accomplished with subtle honey rather
than harsh vinegar. >
And sometimes harsh vinegar is needed.
< Sometimes, sure, but not all the time. >
Perhaps not, but we're talking about a specific case; one in which your
approach was demonstrably ineffective. If you respond to this, please stop
speaking in general terms and make some reference to what you actually
achieved by not even mentioning that you considered the accent racist.-
My goal is to eradicate racism;; I never claimed I always achieve it.
But I try in my own way.
It seems to me that your comments made the poster feel defensive.
Perhaps your method works, perhaps it doesn't.
In either event, I hope you can see that I do oppose racism/bigotry.
