Good points. When he left May, he "retreated" into his cave, stopped

While I take no side in the Yoko v. anti-Yoko debate, it always amuses
me when people refer to the "lost weekend" period as some sort of
halcyon time, when John was *this* close to reuniting the Beatles...if
only he'd had more time!

Folks, he was drinking heavily, probably more so than at any time
since his art college days. He was showing up in tabloids for making a
public ass of himself. He was hanging with the likes of Keith Moon,
who was engaged in destroying himself with drugs and drink. In short,
he was Brittney Spears.

May has some interesting anecdotes about Keith Moon in her book. He
comes off as slightly eccentric and essentially sweet - which jibes
with what others who interacted with Moon at this time (a young
Anthony Keidis, for example) say. According to May, Moon told her he
was glad Lennon was with her.

Moon was hardly "destroying himself" at this time - but then neither
was John Lennon. Sure, a drunken Lennon heckled the Smothers
Brothers. But for the most part he was in good shape - as his
interviews from this period testify. He had finally gotten off heroin
and methadone and, with May, he looked better than he had in years.
She genuinely loved and cared for Lennon. Which is more than can be
said about Yoko.
