If you want to consider yourself "grand" for having a PhD, that's OK
with me.

I think of it as just a mechanism that allowed me to have a career
that's enjoyable and that doesn't seem like "work" to me.

Don't misunderstand, I'm not brushing it off! It's allowed me to have a
continual series of interesting, intellectually challenging jobs, none
of which would have been unavailable to me without the degree. It's
just that after 32 years of working alongside other Ph. D.s, it just
doesn't seem that novel any more!

Besides, physics has always been the only thing outside of music that
I've been interested in that deeply, and I don't believe I ever had the
talent musically to pull off a career in music that is as rewarding as
the one I've had in physics.

I did seriously consider the idea of becoming a studio musician several
times while I was slogging my way through grad school though ;-)
