The actual quotation is as follows:
"For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my
country."

What I read is that she has an *enhanced* sense of pride. More so
than before, and because for the first time in American history a
black man has a legitimate chance to be president.

We differ on our interpretations of this statement.  Further many
people were taken aback by Michelle's statement given the public
reaction.

The "public reaction" being people like Limbaugh blowing it all out of
proportion.

And let's face it. As far as discrimination is concerned, while
anti-Semitism is abhorrent, and I don't intend to belittle it in the
slightest, she has the additional disadvantage that a significant
portion of people have made up their minds about her when they see
her from 100 feet away. She doesn't "blend" as well. People forget
that part.

Plus some groups of people "stand out" just by their name . . . . an
employer or school that engages in discrimination does not even have
to SEE the applicant.  For example, if an employer does not want to
hire women, all he/she/it has to do is read the resume or job
application.  If he sees an applicant is named "Mary Smith" as opposed
to "John Smith" the resume is set aside and not considered.

This is undoubtedly true.  You seem to be implying that I think blacks
are the only ones discriminated against.  They're not.

I'll give you just one of several personal examples. When I was a
teenager I tried to apply for a job sponsored by the government.  IIRC
it was supposed to be a job for disadvantaged youth (whatever that
means).  I called and made some inquiries; it certainly seemed like a
job I qualified for and might like.

On the phone, someone asked me some questions such as what was my
address at the time.  When he or she learned where I lived, they told
me I did not qualify and not to bother submitting an application.  I
asked, "why?  Why can't I even apply?"  She essentially told me that
my neighborhood was not black enough.  Therefore I could not qualify.

If the program was specifically set up for economically disadvantaged
minorities, you may not have qualified.  It happens all the time.

I was not allowed to apply once they found out where I lived. Not only
that, why should a government program be set up only for minorities?
If the key is being disadvantaged, it should be open to all.
