I think I've spotted a pattern with John Lennon in which he would
write a song that relied heavily on established chordal patterns, then
revise the chords to make them more novel or surprising.
Personally, I don't think Lennon gave a darn about any of that...he wrote
songs with the chords he knew, and mainly left it to others to knock it into
shape...though he certainly *shepherded* his song to its conclusion. He was
not a technician when it came to music, but he was a gifted writer, and the
instruments he played, he played effectively.
That being said, he wrote some brilliant songs, and all his musical
knowledge (learned by ear) was focused on his songs.
