Personally, the problem I see with RMBM (and it may be unique to me) is
the "prior censorship" thing. I would prefer a forum in which certain
ground rules are established, people post and their posts show up
immediately, and people who violate the rules are bounced. However,
such a format may be incompatible with usenet, and the prior filtration
may be the only workable compromise.
Considering that the moderators screen only for commercial announcements
and spam, libel or personal attacks, and off-topic material, I'm not sure
how this constitutes censorship. What's being "censored", exactly?
True, the immediacy of instant posts are gone, and I admit that's what I
like about rmb too. But I belong to several moderated newsgroups and mail
lists, all of which have delayed schedules in posting material. Some are
once a day, some several times a week. I guess it boils down to what
suits you best.
Frankly, I don't have the patience to wait for the posts to show up.
That I understand, though it's hard for moderators to be on-call twenty
four hours a day. I don't expect the same kind of turn-around in the
moderated groups I read, but that's just me.
And I find a bit of a problem with the underlying philosophy.
To me it comes across as "I don't trust you" rather than "I'll trust
you until you screw up". I'd much prefer the latter.
Some newsgroups have experimented with robo-mod capabilities, not with
great success. It's pretty hard to get software to make the kinds of
value judgments about topicality necessary to maintaining a newsgroup
properly, and I can see a real problem with spammers who find some clever
way to circumvent parameters designed to keep them out.
