In Canada we had a lot of bands coming from Halifax for a while (pop.
~600,000 including outlying communities). That was around the same time as
the big grunge thing from Seattle leading the brilliant press to call
Halifax "Seattle North" despite its being geographically South of Seattle
(and WAY WAY East of it).
Now with the internet and all that musicians are leaking out from all over
the country and making names for themselves independantly from the big
recording companies. I suspect the same sort of thing is going on in the US
and UK. The whole biz is becoming very much decentralized because of the
technology available. It's not necessarily a good or bad thing but it is a
different thing from the olde days when everyone had to go to Toronto to
make it in Canada, New York or LA to make it in the US or London to make it
in the UK. Where'd you have to go to make it in Albania I wonder?
With all the decentralization it's unlikely we'll ever see such mania as was
seen in '63 again.
