Exactly. Really real's argument is ridiculous because Apple doesn't
sell mp3s through iTunes: it uses m4a, which is also called AAC, and
is a format that has rights requirements to play. They've since added
to it with DRM-free iTunes, and these have better sound fidelity than
the original iTunes offerings. Plus, if you have the program, the help
file recommends AAC instead of MP3 because it has no loss of sound.

Apple *knows* there is a loss of sound in compression. It has it in
the manual for iTunes (or, at least it did when I started using the
program).



I knew this, but was using the word "mp3" generically. Apple is the biggest seller of downloads. True, anyone who works through a manual, or who thinks a bit about how mp3s are offered in different sizes with different audio quality, would figure out that their downloaded music files don't sound as good as wave files.

However, Apple is to be blamed for capturing the public's imagination about buying downloaded files and encouraging people to purchase songs without realizing that cds would sound better.

I think it would be a good idea to warn consumers every time they download that they are not getting cd quality sound. I don't know why so many people here would be opposed to that.
